Me No Fry Policy Statement

The health of members and supporters is of primary concern for the Melville Water Polo Club. Skin cancer is a major public health problem in Australia with 2 out of every 3 people requiring treatment for some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. We recognised that skin cancer is preventable, and that prevention is the best strategy.

The Melville Water Polo Club will actively seek to promote, encourage and support sun protection in all its activities.

Where possible the Club will:-

  1. Consider the reasons for and appropriateness of any rule that restrict the implementation of sun protection strategies.

  2. Schedule activities outside the hours of extreme ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Reschedule sporting events for early morning starts or late finishes ie. before 10.00 am and after 3.00 pm.

  3. Provide SPF 30+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen for members and make it available for sale and / or use of spectators.

  4. The Club will promote suitable sun protective clothing. This may include recommended use of broad brimmed hats or legionnaire styled caps, long sleeved shirts with collars and sunglasses. The Club will also encourage all supporters to wear sun protective clothing.

  5. Maximise the use of existing shade at facilities and when these are not adequate, seek to work with relevant authorities and the community to provide more shade at sporting facilities. Where possible, temporary shade will be provided for special events.

  6. Promote sun safety through newsletters, brochures and over the public address system at competitions.

  7. Encourage senior athletes, coaches, referees, umpires, officials, members in prominent positions, and parents to be SunSmart role models.

  8. Advise competitors (and parents) about the SunSmart Policy at registration and encourage them to comply with it.

  9. Encourage members and spectators to increase their awareness of skin cancer and its associated risk.

  10. Review the SunSmart Policy annually.
