14 and Under Nationals - Girls
Our 14 and Under Girls team participated in the recent National Championships.
Read the full report on this successful trip from coaches Rob Neesham and James Van Kampen.
Congratulations to all the girls, coaching and support staff. A lot of hard work was put in over a long period of time to make this trip possible.
Mini Sharks taste success.
Following on from victories in the local U14 competition for both the boys and girls teams, Melville sent teams to the 14 and under National Club Championships held in Brisbane last week.
Over 370 players competed in this annual event involving 29 teams from all states.
The Melville boys team were victorious following a tense grand final against Wests (Sydney) that went to extra time. A very exciting result for the boys, and a very emotional one for the parents! Sam Powers was named player of the tournament which included some outstanding participants.
The Melville girls team played well to make the semi finals, however went down narrowly in a battle for bronze against tough opposition from Barracudas (Brisbane).
Congratulations to all who represented our club and a special thankyou to all coaches, managers and parents who put in many hours of their time from last June.
Following is a report from boys coach Ray Powers
---
Congratulations to the U14s boys Sharks, on their recent trip to Brisbane where a campaign to win back the national club champions title proved to be successful.
This years event was held post Easter leaving coach Ray Powers and team manager Irene Neesham emptying pockets of chocolate egg wrappings prior to an Easter Sunday flight to the east. A week of healthy food, repeated instruction and exercise in a near sugarless environment was required to help these young men to focus on their waterpolo.
This years championship was contested by 14 teams from locations throughout the Nation. On the Sharks side of the draw were the defending champions "Western Suburbs". The other side of the draws robust teams included, Cronulla and Alstonville.
Due to the large number of protagonists the tournament was held in two venues. "The Valley Pool in Fortitude valley and Musgrave Park Aquatic Centre.
Semi finals and the final were tense closely contested affairs with mistakes under pressure being salient points for both teams. Sean Higgins, who was as solid as a rock all week, was ejected on 3 fouls in the last quarter of the semi-final, and Sam Powers, who took the prestigious "player of the championship" honour was ejected on 3 in the final quarter of the final match. A match which had plenty of heart stopping moments, elation, that sinking feeling and more all wrapped in the extra time periods which followed a 6-6 draw.
Happy to report though that at the final whistle a score of 8-6 in favour of the Sharks was recorded.
All players performed well throughout the week, notably Sam and Sean, Des Hopkins, Jayden Smith and Bill Christiensen (Who's brilliance in goal dazzled us all). Surprise packages Jordan Love and Daniel Mc Comb stepped up to the challenge. Every player scored goals throughout the tournament and every player had a run in the grand final, a proud moment for all involved.
The team is thankful to the club for the opportunity, Tom Hoad and Paul Williams for their direction and advice, not forgetting the parents who helped fundraise, cooked, fed the troops, and of course a big thanks should go out to Irene who should have thirteen boys knocking on her door with cards this coming Mothers Day.
It was all good.
